Resolution Games’ Latest XR Experience Holochess Launches Alongside XREAL AURA

Resolution Games is bringing a new kind of tactical game to spatial computing glasses. Holochess is now available on the Google Play Store for free, launching alongside the new XREAL AURA spatial computing glasses.

You get to watch an entire tactical battlefield come to life right in your physical surroundings

In Holochess, you control a squad of three units and fight against another squad in fast-paced 3v3 battles, except neither player has to sit around waiting for the other to finish their turn. Both sides make their moves simultaneously, and matches last approximately five minutes.

With XREAL AURA, Holochess turns your physical space into a 5×5 tactical grid. Fully animated characters fight across the board, the terrain changes as the match progresses. You can jump into single-player battles against AI opponents or challenge a friend in 1v1 multiplayer.

There are currently two factions to choose from. The Clankers focus on high-tech precision, defense, and damage mitigation, making them a good choice if you prefer a more calculated approach. Meanwhile, the Xenoswarm is all about biological volatility and territory control.

You can command a three-unit squad from your chosen faction. There’s also a third faction that you can pick up through an optional $2.99 in-app purchase.

Holochess has a Crown mechanic that gives you two ways to secure victory

You can eliminate the opposing squad, or take control of the centre tile and collect five crowns. There’s a catch, though, because every crown you earn drains your unit’s health.

As a match goes on, tiles gradually decay and turn into dangerous kill zones. You’ll have to keep adjusting your plans, watch where you’re moving, and avoid getting caught in areas that could quickly turn into a problem.

The whole concept came from the idea of bringing miniature game characters to life in the real world. Resolution Games has already spent quite a bit of time exploring XR tabletop experiences with games like Demeo, which is also available on XREAL AURA.
